The Biggest Lobster Roll EVER…

Why have I been telling everyone about the HUGE lobster roll at Belle Isle Seafood in Winthrop, MA? Because it’s worth the side trip even if the flavor could be cranked up a notch.
I counted 4 claws in the humongous pile of lobster meat in this sandwich. No wonder with a half-pound of lobster—pure unadulterated chunks lightly dressed in mayo without confusing frills like minced celery, onion, or herbs—at an eye-popping $18.99 price tag (plus tax). The mound of meat crushes the grilled traditional New England-style flat-sided hot dog roll and bits of iceburg lettuce.
Garnishes were fresh and nicely dwarfed by the meat: the crunchy onion rings had just enough golden breading to allow the sweet taste of the onions to shine through. The coleslaw, always a pretender to the fancier dishes under any circumstances, was fine—crisp with enough mayo—and in a paper cup about the size of a medium apple.
Really a fish store with a big takeout business, Belle Isle Seafood is hidden in a peeling white rectangular building before the bridge crossing into Winthrop. We almost missed it! It’s right after the Wyatt’s gas station and car wash.
Just cash—no checks or credit cards. Cold sodas—no wine or beer. But plenty of lobster.
